Misdemeanor Division
The Misdemeanor Division handles all cases involving offenses punishable
by fine and/or confinement in jail. The types of offenses that are
prosecuted in this division include thefts, assaults, prostitution,
criminal trespass and driving while intoxicated, to name a few. There
are 38 assistant district attorneys in the division, 4 investigators
and 13 legal assistants. On average, this division handles over 90,000
cases a year. Included in the misdemeanor division are several “specialty
courts”: two family violence courts, more commonly known as
domestic violence, which only handle cases involving offenses between
family members, husband/wife, and boyfriend/girlfriend; a mental
health diversion court which handles defendants with specific mental
health issues and a DWI court which supervises a number of DWI offenders.
